If you're a Willamette University student planning to live off campus in Salem, it's a good idea to start your housing search early. The more time you give yourself, the more opportunities you'll have to compare locations, prices, roommates, and different types of housing.

At JumpOffCampus, we recommend starting your search around January or February for the following academic year. If you already know you'll be moving off campus, starting even earlier can give you more time to find a place that fits your budget and preferences.

✩ Set your housing budget

✩ Decide whether you want roommates

✩ Research neighborhoods and commuting options

✩ Browse Salem listings on JumpOffCampus

✩ Consider whether you'll walk, bike, drive, or use public transportation

March–April: Contact Landlords

Once you know what you're looking for, start reaching out to landlords and scheduling tours.

✩ Save listings that match your needs

✩ Contact landlords and ask questions

✩ Find roommates if necessary

✩ Schedule apartment tours

✩ Ask about utilities, deposits, parking, lease terms, and move-in dates

Don't wait until you find the "perfect" apartment before contacting landlords. Good listings can fill quickly.

April–June: Finalize Your Housing

Once you've found a property that works for you:

✩ Confirm the property and address

✩ Read the entire lease before signing

✩ Confirm your move-in date and total costs

✩ Ask about renters insurance requirements

✩ Make sure you understand all lease rules and responsibilities

If you haven't found a place by June, don't panic. Expand your search to different neighborhoods, price ranges, or housing types.
