Although no one wants to believe they could get scammed, rental scams are unfortunately a reality that students can encounter when searching for off-campus housing. Willamette University recommends that students see an apartment before sending money, request a written lease, and carefully review the terms before signing.

At JumpOffCampus, we screen listings and take steps to help students find legitimate off-campus housing options. However, screening is only the first step. You should always do your own research before signing a lease or making a payment. Be cautious if a landlord asks for money before you've seen the property, the rent seems unusually low, or you're pressured to make a decision immediately. Check out this JumpOffCampus blog post to avoid getting scammed when searching for off-campus housing.

✩ Visit the property before sending money.

✩ Verify the landlord or property manager and the property's address.

✩ Read the entire lease before signing.

✩ Ask what utilities, deposits, and additional fees are included.

✩ Be careful with listings or landlords who pressure you to pay quickly.
